Big News for Maryland 
Cianbro Corporation Hires New Senior Project Engineer -
Cianbro is pleased to announce the recent re-hiring of Team Member Tom Mawhinney who will serve as a senior project engineer for Cianbro’s Mid-Atlantic Region based in Baltimore, Maryland. He will be undertaking the recently awarded Big Slackwater Rehabilitation in Hagerstown, Maryland, for the National Park Service. The project is a rehabilitation of the Chesapeake & Ohio (C&O) Canal. Tom has over 25 years experience in the industry as project manager, senior project engineer, estimator, and mechanical engineer. Tom was a Cianbro team member from 1995- 2006. Because of his diverse experience, Tom brings significant mentoring opportunities to our younger engineers and project managers and will be a key player in the successful completion of the Big Slackwater Rehabilitation project.
About the Big Slackwater C&O Project
The C&O Canal, built in the 1820’s, once served as an important transportation link for commerce by way of barges and other vessels for the nation. Nearly 200 years later, the canal is primarily a recreation destination for outdoor enthusiasts. However, a critical section of the towpath has crumbled over the years, causing this portion to be inaccessible to visitors. The federal stimulus program is funding the repair of a 1.5 mile section of the towpath. The job will entail a wide range of improvements including tree removal, jet grouting, drilled pier installation, caisson drilling, and placement of precast deck and face panels. The majority of the work must take place from barges anchored offshore on the Potomac River. Once the renovations are completed, the entire length of the historic C&O Canal will be accessible to the nation's citizens.
