Therrien Waddell Honored for Best Industrial/Flex Office Building

Therrien Waddell was honored on May 5th at the 2009 National Association of Industrial and Office Properties (NAIOP) Awards of Excellence Gala for the "Best Industrial/Flex Office Building". The project consisted of a new two-story, 37,000 square foot building with corporate offices and warehouse for Singleton Electric Company in Gaithersburg, Maryland. Therrien Waddell teamed up with DVA Architects and constructed the new facility while Singleton continued to occupy their existing office headquarters on site. Extensive underground excavation required shoring and concrete foundation retaining walls for the structural steel and masonry structure. The exterior of the building consists of composite metal panels, brick veneer, and EIFS. The second floor custom offices featured pocket doors, interior glass wall panels, stained millwork & wood trim, individual office climate and lighting controls, specialty lighting, state of the art media, conference and training areas, a fitness room and elevator. Therrien Waddell performed the services of a Construction Manager at Risk. While Singleton self performed the electrical portion of the project, the partnering effort by all parties early in the design and project development stages contributed greatly to the success of the effort on all sides and the subsequent honor received by the NAIOP award.

Oyster Pier - Saving the Oysters One Pile at a Time

This past spring, Cianbro received marching orders for the construction of a pier along the eastern shore of Chesapeake Bay in Maryland.
This project is part of an effort to increase the capacity to cultivate oysters at the University of Maryland's Center for Environmental Science, Horn Point Laboratory. This upgrade, in turn, is expected to improve the quality of the Chesapeake Bay. Cianbro is proud to contribute to the task of improving the environment and saving the bay.
Cianbro's Mid-Atlantic Region mobilized by assembling a 230-ton crawler crane and component barge arrangement at the company's new bulkhead in Baltimore. In June, the crane was shipped on the barge, and the pile driving crew is currently installing the test piles. The pile driving is expected to be complete by the end of summer.
The team will then provide crane support to the concrete sub-contractor. Cianbro will manage or self-perform the building, mechanical, and electrical work in 2010.

Self-Consolidating Concrete Delivers Efficiency, Beauty, Savings and More.

Self-consolidating concrete, also known as self-compacting concrete and SCC, is a highly flowable, non-segregating concrete that spreads into place, fills formwork, and encapsulates even the most congested reinforcement, all without any mechanical vibration. It is defined as a concrete mix that can be placed purely by means of its own weight, with little or no vibration. As a high-performance concrete, SCC delivers these attractive benefits while maintaining all of concrete's customary mechanical and durability characteristics. Adjustments to traditional mix designs and the use of superplasticizers creates flowing concrete that meets tough performance requirements. If needed, low dosages of viscosity modifier can eliminate unwanted bleeding and segregation.
Since its inception in the 1980s, the use of SCC has grown tremendously. The development of high performance polycarboxylate polymers and viscosity modifiers have made it possible to create "flowing" concrete without compromising durability, cohesiveness, or compressive strength. The flowability of SCC is measured in terms of spread when using a modified version of the slump test (ASTM C 143). The spread (slump flow) of SCC typically ranges from 18 to 32 inches (455 to 810 mm) depending on the requirements for the project. The viscosity, as visually observed by the rate at which concrete spreads, is an important characteristic of plastic SCC and can be controlled when designing the mix to suit the type of application being constructed. SCC's unique properties give it significant economic, constructability, aesthetic and engineering advantages. SCC is an increasingly attractive choice for optimizing site manpower (through reduction of labor and possibly skill level), lowering noise levels, and allowing for a safer working environment. SCC allows easier pumping (even from bottom up), flows into complex shapes, transitions through inaccessible spots, and minimizes voids around embedded items to produce a high degree of homogeneity and uniformity. That's why SCC allows for denser reinforcement, optimized concrete sections and shapes, and greater freedom of design while producing superior surface finishes and textures.
Next time you have a job that calls for the considerable economic, aesthetic, engineering, or design benefits of self-consolidating concrete, make sure it's at the top of your list!

BPM Select - Blue Book

Westchester, N.Y. –The Blue Book of Building and Construction officially launched a free, Internet-based building product search engine. BPM Select is powered by The Blue Book and integrated with licensed technology by Google.
BPM Select was developed for the AEC Community (architects, engineers and contractors) and enables users to search for building products within an exclusive, highly targeted database of national and regional manufacturer websites. Organized by the industry’s CSI divisions, BPM Select returns only relevant building product manufacturer websites, rather than the mass of mixed results typically returned by the major search engines.
BPM Select also offers direct access to The Blue Book database for sourcing related suppliers and installers of the specific building products selected – all within the user’s current workflow.
"The Blue Book continues to develop products and services aimed at simplifying the preconstruction process for the AEC Community. After hearing from many architects and other construction professionals who have a need to find products, manufacturers and suppliers, we realized the challenges and frustration the industry faces. Search results often return a lot of irrelevant ‘noise’ and it is time-consuming to sort through it all. We’re confident BPM Select will quickly become a powerful solution for our users to search, spec and source building products," explained Rich Johnson, General Manager of The Blue Book.
Search BPM Select today at
www.bpmselect.com or for more information, please call The Blue Book at 800-431-2584.
